Usedom Kitesurfen – Die Insel Usedom ist nicht nur bekannt für ihre historischen Kaiserbäder und langen Dünenstrände, sondern auch wegen der erstklassigen Kitebedingungen an den Spots der Ostsee und dem Achterwasser, einer seeartigen, meist stehstiefen Boddenlandschaft zwischen Usedom und den Festland.

Die Insel Usedom ist mit knapp 450 Quadrat­kilometern die zweit­größte Insel Deutschlands. Wie Perlen reihen sich die traditionellen Seebäder aus Kaiserzeiten entlang des Ostseestrandes auf. Gleich dahinter finden sich mondäne Hotels und Pensionen zwischen schattigen Kiefernwäldern. Etwa ein Drittel von Usedom besteht aus naturbelassenen Wäldern, die mit unzähligen Rad- und Wanderwegen durchzogen sind. Die Insel ist ganz auf den Tourismus ausgerichtet, so lässt sich das Kitesurfen hervorragend mit einem Familienurlaub kombinieren.

Usedom stehen entlang des knapp 50 Kilometer langen Ostseestrandes und an den Ufern des Achterwassers unterschiedliche Kitespots für verschiedenen Windrichtungen zur Auswahl. Die bekanntesten Ostseespots befinden sich am Sportstrand von Karlshagen im nördlichen Teil der Insel. Bei stärkeren Nord-Ost Winden rauschen am Spots exzellente Ostseewellen rein.

Bei den häufigen Westwindlagen der Region bietet Usedom an den Kitespots des Achterwassers flache und stehtiefe Bedingungen an, was gerade Anfänger den Einstieg in das Kitesurfen erleichtert. Ückeritz ist wohl der bekanntest Spot an diesem Binnengewässer. Ein weiterer stehtiefer Kitespot befindet sich nördlich von Karlshagen am Strand von Peenemünde. Der große Stehbereich und der mäßige Shorebreak sind ideal für Waveeinsteiger. Ahlbeck ist der östlichste Kitespot Deutschlands und regelmäßiger Austragungsort von nationalen Meisterschaften.

Messungen des deutschen Deutschen Wetterdienstes bescheinigen der Insel Usedom knapp 1900 Sonnenstunden im Jahr. Damit gehört die Insel zu den sonnenreichsten Gegenden in Deutschland. Das gemäßigt warme Ostseeküstenklima beschert Usedom eine jährliche durchschnittliche Lufttemperatur von knapp neun Grad Celsius. Diese setzt sich aus mäßig warmen Sommertemperaturen und kalten Wintern zusammen. Im Hochsommer liegt die mittlere Höchsttemperatur nur knapp über der 20 Grad Marke, dank der ständig kühlenden frischen Seeluft. Im Winter fallen die Temperaturen auch mal unter den Gefrierpunkt, halten sich aber meist bei zwei bis drei Grad.



Regen fällt auf Usedom trotz der vielen Sonnenstunden ganzjährig. Dabei liegen die Regentage je Monat gleichmäßig verteilt bei acht bis elf Tagen pro Monat. Die höchste Niederschlagsmenge fällt wie auch auf der Nachbarinsel Rügen sowie an der benachbarten Mecklenburgischen Küste wider erwartend in den Sommermonaten. Dies ist durch Gewitterfronten begründet, die dann teils heftige aber auch kurze Regenschauer mit sich bringen. Die niederschlagsärmsten und somit trockensten Monate liegen im Frühjahr.

Schwankungen der Lufttemperatur spiegeln sich auch umgehend auf die Wassertemperatur der Ostsee an den Küsten Usedoms wieder. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass die im Vergleich zu anderen Meeren relativ flache Ostsee, die an den tiefsten Stellen gerade mal 55 Meter misst, die Wärme nicht lange speichern kann. Auf das Jahr gesehen brauchen die Wassertemperaturen der offenen Ostsee im Frühjahr viel Zeit, um die Zehn Grad Marke hinter sich zu lassen. Während es bereits im März und April schon schöne sonnige Tage mit warmen frühlingshaften Temperaturen gibt, befindet sich die Ostsee noch im tiefsten Winterschlaf mit eisigen drei bis fünf Grad.

Erst gegen Ende Mai klettert die Temperatur des Wassers auf Zehn Grad. Dann geht es aber rasch und sie steigt dann im Hochsommer auf kite- und badefreundliche 18 bis 20 Grad. In den seichten Boddengewässern und flachen Buchten des Stettiner Haffs und des Achterwassers sogar auf bis zu 23 Grad. Im Herbst mit zunehmend kühleren Lufttemperaturen kühlt auch das Wasser schnell wieder ab. So fällt die Wassertemperatur bereits im Oktober wieder unter die Zehn Grad Marke und die Kitesaison ist für die breite Masse der Kitesurfer auf Usedom wieder beendet.

Der Wind zum Kitesurfen wird auf Usedom über zwei Wetterlagen angeliefert. Die Erste und Häufigste resultiert von Tiefdruckgebieten über dem Atlantik. Diese bescheren den Kitespots an der Nordsee richtig starken Westwind, der dann aber in Richtung Osten immer mehr abnimmt. Diese Abnahme der Windstärke hat zum Einen damit zu tun, dass der westliche Wind über die Landmasse Schleswig Holsteins und Dänemarks muss bis er auf die Ostsee trifft. Zum Anderen nehmen die Druckunterschiede vom warmen Azorenhoch und kaltem Islandtief immer mehr ab, je weiter man in Richtung Osten kommt.

Die zweite, weitaus seltener vorkommende Wetterlage wird von skandinavischen Hochdruckgebieten geprägt. Besonders im Frühjahr kommen diese häufiger vor und sorgen für hervorragenden Ostwind begleitet von viel Sonnenschein. Gesellt sich zu diesem Hochdruckgebiet noch ein Tiefdruckgebiet in Mitteleuropa, dann wird es stürmisch an den Küsten Usedoms. Die beste Reisezeit zum Kitesurfen und für Kitereisen auf die Insel Usedom ist von April bis Oktober, wobei im Hochsommer auch mal mit einer längeren Phase an windlosen Tagen oder vermehrt mit Leichtwindtagen kalkuliert werden muss.
